ROMANCE VS. COMEDY

ROMANCE:

Genre conventions - content:
In romance films, most of the time the narrative consists in a boy meeting a girl, these two characters are the main characters of the film, their situations may vary, one of them can either be unhappy in their current relationship or they have been heartbroken. These two characters usually meet one another and fall in love or one of them does. Then there is a disruption where something or someone is trying to ruin this connection. The ending usually works in two way, one where they surpass adversity and live happily ever after or the other where one of them dies or has to move away for a good reason.
Some props that are usually used, depending on the story line of the film, are some sort of flowers and gift that will be given to one of the main characters, which reflects the commonly romance within the relationship between the characters.

Genre conventions - techniques:
In a romance film the setting consists in soft lighting effects and/or relatively natural lighting, which is used to achieve the feeling of it being in touch with reality making the story believable and realistic. The environment is also important in some romance films, because it is commonly used to set the mood of some of the scenes, per say when something sad is happening with on of the character, we see either rain in the background or even the character walking under it.
A common icon is the soft tender music to represent the sensitivity of the relationship and create the mood and often represent characters personalities. Depending on the mood the scene the music changes, if the movie is sad then the music will generally use just one instrument to create the lonely and sad environment, or even soft lyrics can also be used to create a lonely mood. However if there is something good happening the song is usually upbeat and cheerful.
Sometimes romance films can use big cities as a setting so the majority of people can associate with it. Typically the settings used in romance films are known as where a chance encounter may take place.
The typical clothing may vary depending on the time where the film is suppose to take place in. In general the male will commonly have a very smart, yet casual dress sense, for example if the movie was filmed in this time period, the male would be using a suit to reflect his professionalism but the casual side will show how comfortable with himself he is. The female will wear long dresses and smart clothing that shows off her figure.

Institutional Conventions - How is genre marketed
Most romantic movies are preference to females due to the fact that they stereo typically promote the view that females are more empathetic and prefer to watch. However a large ratio of males even prefer watching romantic movies.
Many couples watch romantic movies because somehow their problems and emotions are the same with the ones shown in these movies and set some kind of aspiration and standard.

Example #1: ME BEFORE YOU
Lou starts off as Will’s carer, but eventually they fall in love with one another. Throughout most of the film the lighting is bright and the music is tender. Their costumes are pretty simple yet reflect their personality, when they attend to an important event, they are both dressed up which shows their connection and affection with one another. However at the end they do not end up living happily ever after because Will decides to end his life, and the lighting starts to become more opaque and the music is soft to reflect the sadness Lou feels when losing Will.

Example #2: THE NOTEBOOK

Mill worker Noah and rich girl Allie are desperately in love, but her parents aren’t happy with the relationship and do not approve it. When Noah leaves off to serve in war, their affair seems to end and Allie gets involved with another man. Once Noah returns, the plot of the movies starts. In this movie nature is a huge element, in moments of despair and sadness there’s rain, and darkness, in moments of happiness, it’s sunny and bright. A lot of the music also reveals and sets the mood of several scenes.
